This session is about being an environmentally aware pet owner and how to talk with others in the community about responsible pet ownership. The workshop will be led by Brian Shields, Biosecurity Advisor Pest Detection Dogs, and Dr Imogen Bassett, Biosecurity Principal Advisor, Auckland Council. Brian and Imogen will be joined for a panel discussion by Glenda of WISCA and Dr Alex Gilmore from Waiheke Vets.

Rat Genetics with Rachel Fewster

Thursday 28 October, 6-7:30pm

From tiny sea snails to colossal right whales, wildlife and conservation modelling researcher Rachel Fewster follows data not only across species but across the world. Rachel will discuss what is known about Waiheke stoats and rats, how they fit into the bigger picture and share some incredible stories from around the country showcasing what has been discovered about these wily adversaries.

Rachel coordinates the CatchIT software program for community pest-control schemes and has been a pioneer of genetic analyses to find the source of swimming rats, mice, and stoats from all over the country. She will talk about how DNA evidence has become an essential tool towards a predator-free New Zealand.

Saving our iconic trees: Conservation & protection of Waiheke’s Native plant ecosystems

Nick Waipara (Plant and Food Research) and Rebekah Fuller (Auckland Council) address how to prevent, identify and manage threats to our trees including Myrtle rust and Kauri Dieback.

Nick Waipara is the Science group leader at Plant and Food research and Ngā Rākau Taketake Co-Lead and Rebekah Fuller the Senior Plant Pathogens Advisor at Auckland Council.

Navigating digital tools for Conservation: Where to start and what’s next?  

Thursday 11 November, 6pm onwards

Hugo Geddes, Senior Bio information Analyst, Auckland Council provides an overview of existing digital tools to help manage your conservation activity and community engagement. Covers promotion and identity (websites and social media), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), GIS and Data management and Volunteer Management Systems (VMS).

Hugo will also provide an update on the tools being created at council and summarise what developments you can expect in the near future.
