Collective WilderFest

WilderFest 2024 - what a day!

Huge thanks to everyone who participated and attended WilderFest 2024! This year WilderFest had a new format (as well as a new name) and was held in conjunction with Music In Parks at the Onetangi Sports Park during EcoFest. We’re excited about the positive feedback we have had so far and the impact this event has created for the local and wider community.

The day was filled with educational stalls, inspiring talks, kai, and live music supplied by Music In Parks! We hosted local community groups that are doing amazing mahi in conservation on Waiheke, such as Collective Projects Te Korowai o Waiheke and Waiheke Marine Project.

Info and activity stalls also included the Waiheke Resources Trust and Island Waste Collective, Dark Sky Waiheke and WISCA with Auckland Council's Animal Management team, Forest & Bird and Auckland Council Environmental Services team. We also hosted Talking Tree Hill who created a nature map of Waiheke throughout the day using upcycled materials.

We'd like to extend special thanks to our speakers, Blair Anderson Ngāti Paoa, Cath Handley Local Board Chair, Denisa from The Recovery Shop who shared what they do to help Waiheke meet its zero waste goals, Kym from the Wetlands team at WRT shared how vital wetlands are for the environment to thrive, and Aaron from Animal Management highlighted the importance of responsible dog ownership on Waiheke. Finally, Tineke and Emma from Save the Kiwi spoke about the potential for introducing Kiwi to Waiheke Island and what needs to be done to achieve this!

Also big shout outs to Amanda at Sparkle Kids Face Painting who worked her magic relentlessly throughout the day, the Rotary Club for loaning its gazebos, and Artworks Theatre for its bean bags and mats. And kai supplied by Napoli Street Pizza Fritta, Indy's Curry Pot and the Zero Waste team at WRT keeping the whole event spotless!

Waiheke Collective Hui

Collective Spotlight - Responsible pet ownership has been a recurring hot topic in our Collective hui's! So for this session, Dr. Imogen Basset from Auckland Council was invited to share her insights and expertise in this space.

In this session, Imogen outlined Auckland Council's approach to cat management, and the wider national context, including strategies for managing different classes of cats (companion and unowned cats). She will also be available to discuss strategies for effectively promoting behaviour change to increase rates of responsible cat ownership behaviours.

Read meeting minutes here.

Imogens presentation here.

Dr Imogen Bassett is Principal Advisor Biosecurity at Auckland Council. Imogen led the development of the council's Regional Pest Management Plan, during which consultation cats were a hot topic of interest. Since then, Imogen has been putting lessons learned from that process to use alongside social science research, to support community conservation groups to tackle this topic effectively.

Nine Lives (For Cats and Birds) Project Launch

Tuesday 18th February from 5.30-6.30.

Waiheke Sustainability Centre

There will be a s

Short presentation and a Q & A session followed by light refreshments.

Nine Lives (for birds and cats) is a new project supported by the Waiheke Collective and Auckland Council Biosecurity.   Ngā manu o Aotearoa are a great taonga and have been under threat by a number of introduced predators.  One of these is the cat, a species believed to kill over one million birds in Aotearoa per year.  Cats are, also, an important companion animal for many people and already Waiheke has a 'responsible pet ownership' initiative and nationally acclaimed brochure supported by conservation groups and animal welfare agencies on ngā motu.  Nine Lives builds on this initiative with the creation, and introduction of a brightly coloured (particularly red and blue) fabric ruff attached to a cat collar.  Overseas research indicates that such ruffs reduce bird predation by 80%.  The ruffs, also, support the companion cat's safety in a number of ways.   BYO Bags, who campaigned against plastic pollution by sewing recycled shopping bags, are now making the fabric ruffs and these ruffs and 'quick release' cat collars will be offered free to owners (small donations will also be accepted) who are happy to trial them.  A photo of Persia modelling the ruff is below
